It is the mission of Fire Cadet Academy to develop the confidence and self reliance of its participants, to promote a sense of both team cooperation and individual responsibility, to teach and develop basic fire fighting and emergency service skills, and to help build in young people a strong sense of the need for community involvement and support.
Prospective cadets should be between the ages of 14 and 17 years by the time the Academy opens. Consideration will be given to others on an individual basis. If you have any questions concerning the age of your cadet, please contact the Academy Directors at the phone number shown below.
Sponsorship by a local fire department is not absolutely necessary; however, each cadet must come to the Academy with NFPA compliant turn out gear and fully current SCBA apparatus. Should your local fire department not be able to provide such equipment for you, we have a very limited supply of this gear available. Please contact one of the officers listed below for more information.
The VSFA is committed to making Fire Academy available to cadets from throughout the state. The facilities available this summer limit attendance to 48 cadets. In making final selections, factors such as age, the location of the cadet's sponsoring department, number of other applicants from the same area, present involvement in a cadet program and/or current participation with a fire department will be factors considered. Current cadet or parent membership in VSFA is not required, but will be considered.
The cost of the Academy will be $325.00 per cadet. Supplemental funding is being provided by the VSFA, Volunteer Recruitment & Retention Project, the Vermont State Firefighters Assocation Inc, and other corporate sponsors. Some scholarship assistance may be available.

The Cadet Summer Fire Academy is a week-long program for 14 to 17 year olds who are interested in the field of emergency services. This program is designed to offer a sample of the many aspects of fire-rescue services by both classroom, hands-on learning, and exciting field trips.
