The Vermont Emergency Services Memorial is located at the Main Building of the Vermont Police and Fire Academy on Academy Road in Pittsford. A cooperative effort has lead to the addition of several features to the Vermont Emergency Services Memorial. Recent work has been done including the installation of flag poles, a sidewalk, lighting, and landscaping. Each service is now represented by a flag as blue and red lights illuminate the main monument each night. Special thanks go out to the Staff of the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services, Vermont Fire Academy, and the Vermont Police Academy for this work. Inscribed bricks are on sale and will be inlaid at the memorial.

Mark W. Camara Poultney Fire Department & Poultney Rescue Squad Line of Duty Death - October 7, 2011
POULTNEY - Mark Walter Camara, 41, a lifetime resident of Poultney, died unexpectedly Friday, October 7, 2011, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born on November 26, 1969, in Rutland, the son of Walter D. and Kathleen (Jordan) Camara.
Mark graduated from Poultney High School in 1988. He enlisted in the 368 Engineer Battalion Company C Army Reserves in Rutland, where he served for 16 years prior to being honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 2004.
He married Samantha M. Baker on August 4, 2007, in Bomoseen.
Mark had been an employee of the Poultney Rescue Squad for the last 23 years.
He was a member of the Poultney Fire Department, and the Poultney Rescue Squad, where he served as president and active member.
Mark enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, NASCAR, the Red Sox, the New England Patriots and most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his son and wife.
Survivors include his wife Samantha and a son Lucas Killian Camara, both of Poultney; his mother Kathleen Camara of Rutland; his father Walter Camara and his wife Libby of Castleton; two brothers, Eugene Camara and his wife Merja of Stockholm, Sweden, and Kevin Camara and his wife Caroline of Starksboro; four nieces, three nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at the Poultney Fire House. Burial will follow in the Hillside Cemetery in Castleton.
Friends may call on Tuesday, Oct. 11, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home.
The family asks that everyone dress casual, and camouflage is encouraged.

Chief Ronald Bellavance Hardwick Fire Department
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hardwick’s Fire Chief Ronald Bellavance. Chief Bellavance is a 43-year member of the department, and the Chief for the past 21 years.

GERALD "GIGGY" LLOYD Rutland City Fire Department Past VSFA 2nd Vice President
Gerald T. "Jiggy" Lloyd, age 75, died Monday, October 18, 2010, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born on March 31, 1935, in Rutland, the son of Reginald P. and Geraldine (Weinle) Lloyd. Jiggy was raised and educated in Rutland, and was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy, class of 1953. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1955-57 in Japan and Fort Dix, N.J.
Jiggy was a decorated firefighter with the Rutland City Fire Department for 41 years, serving as chief from 1985 until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of the International Association of Firefighters and the Vermont Career Fire Chiefs Association. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Rutland American Legion Post 31 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 648.
Survivors include his children, Kevin Lloyd and wife Deborah of Belmont, Mass., and Susan (Lloyd) Robertson and husband John of Quincy, Mass.; former wife, Janice Lloyd of Rutland; brothers, Edward Lloyd of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Gregory Carpenter of Calif.; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Rebecca Lloyd of Belmont, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews throughout the New England area. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Robert, and sister, Leslie.
Per his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral. A celebration of his life will be held at Christ the King Church in Rutland on Friday, October 22, 2010, at 1:00 p.m.

Terrence A. Collins, 72, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 in Fletcher Allen Health Care of Burlington. He was born on March 1, 1938, in New York, N.Y., the son of Warren and Anne (Singleton). They predeceased him. He grew up in Fitchburg, Mass., moving to Vermont in 1957, starting his 35 year career with IBM. He married Winona Young on July 16, 1960 at Holy Family Church in Essex Junction. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this summer with family. He was a life member of the Essex Junction Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in Vermont. He is survived by his wife, Winona (Young) Collins, of Essex Junction; his four children, Kathleen Collins of Milton, Kevin Collins and his wife, Lynn, of Essex Junction, Brian Collins of Essex Junction, and Michael Collins of Essex Junction; four grandchildren, Danielle, Caitlin, Christopher, and Chad; a great-grandson, Gavin; his sister, Susan Belluschi and her husband, Peter, of Portland, Ore.; one brother, Craig Collins and his wife, Marybeth, of Delmar, N.Y.; as well as his extended family and his favorite dog, Murphy. Rev. George H. Dupuis VSFA Chaplain
Rev. George H. Dupuis, parish priest of St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church in Arlington from 1982-2008, passed away peacefully Friday evening September 10, 2010 at Rose Lane at the Village at Fillmore Pond in Bennington. Rev. Dupuis was born in Hartford, Conn. on January 29, 1924 the son of the late Alphee and Irene (Martin) Dupuis. Rev. Dupuis attended St. Thomas and St. Joseph schools in Springfield, Massachusetts and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1942.
He attended Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. in June and July of 1943 where he took a six week summer course to complete two years of college. He then went on to attend St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Conn., St. Paul University Seminary in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and completed a continuing education course in Casa-Rome, Italy. Rev. Dupuis was ordained at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington, Vermont on June 3, 1950 by Bishop Edward F. Ryan. Rev. Dupuis assignments throughout his career included St. Francis Xavier Church in Winooski, Vermont, St. Peter's Church in Vergennes, Vermont, St. Paul's Church in Orwell, Vermont, All Saints Church in Richford, Vermont, St. Peter's Church in Vergennes, Vermont and St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church in Arlington, Vermont from 1982-2008.
Rev. Dupuis had many Diocesan responsibilities during his career which included Weeks School Chaplain in Vergennes, CYO Addison County Moderator, Vermont and Northern new Hampshire St. John the Baptist Society, Spiritual Director, Vermont Council of Catholic Woman Diocesan Moderator, Spiritual Director-World apostolate of Fatima, Dean of Bennington County, Diocesan Consultor, Presbyteral Council, where he also served as Executive Secretary and Diocesan Education Committee for the clergy. His civic organizations and honors included 251 Club of Vermont- Charter Member, Vermont Civil Air Patrol Chaplain where he also served as Squadron Chaplain, Deputy Wing Chaplain and Wing Chaplain, Vermont State Firefighters Association Chaplain, Southern Vermont Medical Center Pastoral Hospital Advisory Board in Bennington, Chaplain Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Andrew #259 Bennington, Vermont, Chaplain Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Margaret #2406 Arlington, Vermont and Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Member of St. Stephen Assembly #1156 Winooski, Vermont. Rev. Dupuis is survived by his nieces, Ann DeCristofaro of Stowe, Massachusetts and Irene Missy Farris of Oregon. He was preceded in death by his sister Ritha Greaves who died April 9, 2003 and his brother Clement Dupuis. PITTSFORD -Ivan Joseph Capowski, 70, died Aug. 17, 2010, at his home.
He was born in Newburgh, N.Y., Sept. 7, 1939, the son of Dr. William V. and Valerie Capowski.
He attended Marlborough (N.Y.) Central Schools, the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler, Fordham University and the State University of New York Orange County Community College in Middletown.In 1986, he graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., and was chief steward and chef with American Overseas Marine Corp.
Mr. Capowski was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam from 1963 to 1965, in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves for 15 years and in the Merchant Marines.
He was employed by Mount Vernon (N.Y.) Fire Department and New York City Fire Department for 22 years.More recently, he worked for Proctor Gas and as a bus driver for Otter Valley School District.
He was a member of Pittsford Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion, Elks Club, Uniformed Firefighters Association Retired Firefighter, Red Knights International Motorcycle Group Vermont Chapter, Proctor-Pittsford Country Club and Proctor Fish & Game Club.
Mr. Capowski enjoyed reading, golf, sailing and surf fishing on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Paul) Capowski of Pittsford, whom he married Sept. 28, 2002; a brother, Stephen Capowski of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; a daughter, Kristin Huggins; two stepchildren, David Reczek and Lynn LaFemina; five grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland where friends may call from 11 a.m. prior to the service officiated by the Rev. Beverly Anderson.A reception will follow at Howe Franklin Center in Rutland.
Burial will be at a later date in Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.

John H. Pratt Clarendon Fire Department
NORTH CLARENDON - John Holden Pratt Jr., 89, of North Clarendon, Vt., died August 10, 2010, at Rutland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was born November 16, 1920, in North Clarendon, Vt., the son of John Holden and Katherine (Holden) Pratt Sr.
Mr. Pratt graduated from Rutland High School in 1937, Vermont Technical School in 1938 and from the University of Vermont in 1942 with a B.S. in agriculture. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served during WWII. On April 19, 1952, he married Barbara Mae Atwood in Rutland Town.
Mr. Pratt worked on the Pratt Brothers Farm from 1947-1971. They sold the farm in 1971, and moved into a house that he and his wife built on former farmland. From 1972-1973, he worked as a carpenter and then he worked for G.H. Grimm Co. from 1973-1999.
He was a founding member and an active member for 25 years of the Clarendon Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Barbara A. Pratt of North Clarendon, Vt.; a daughter, Elizabeth Pratt of Burlington, Vt.; a son, James Pratt and his wife Sharon of Shelburne, Vt.; a sister, Alice Myers of Rutland Town; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard H. Pratt, in 1990.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 16, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the Tossing Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Boutwell, pastor of the Pawlet Community Church, officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Glen Cemetery.

Hibbard Pudvah Highgate Fire Department Hibbard Homer Pudvah, age 75 years, a lifelong Franklin County resident died early Thursday morning, June 10, 2010, at his home with his loving wife Betty and family at his side.
Born in Montgomery, VT on, May 10, 1935, he was the son of the late Emile and Lillian (Touchette) Pudvah. He received his early education in Montgomery and Berkshire schools later graduating from Enosburg Falls High School. He honorably served his country in the Vermont Army National Guard and was a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post #1, St. Albans. On February 4, 1956 he married the former Betty Domina who survives him.
Hibbard was employed several years as a truck driver hauling General Motors products for Anchor Motor Freight based in Champlain, NY. In earlier years he had worked for the Sheldon Pulp Mill, Burl Barnum and O.C. McCuin & Sons. He served the Town of Highgate as Zoning Administrator and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 1090 St. Albans. While wintering in Sebring, FL Hibbard became an active member of the Forth Degree Knights of Columbus. Locally he was a longtime member of Nativity / St. Louis Parish. His favorite hobbies included hunting, fishing, woodworking, playing the guitar and helping others.
Hibbard’s was most proud of his long affiliation as a Franklin County Firefighter. He began attending fires with his father in Berkshire at the age of seventeen. In 1960 he moved to Highgate and was instrumental in the establishment of the Highgate Volunteer Fire Department. Since that time he has continued to be very active in the department serving as its first secretary and progressing through the ranks to becoming Chief. In 1968 he spent many hours acquiring the first new pumper and converting the old Congregational Church into a new fire station. He later was elected by the Highgate membership to Department President and became very active in forming the Franklin County International Firefighter’s Association and served as its secretary and Chief. He also assumed the role of county representative to the VSFA Executive Board and has served continuously since. He has also played a major role as a member of the VSFA Sports and Judging Committee and has been a prime mover and supporter of the Annual Franklin County Muster. He has also continued to enroll in training courses, regional schools and the National Fire Academy. On July 29, 2000 Hibbard was named Senior Firefighter of the Year.
In addition to his wife Betty of 54 years, he leaves his children, Sally, Wayne, Randy, Denise, David and their families, Elwin, Joshua, Sharon, Kyle, Ashley, Lise, Christopher, Hailee Mae and Steve; two brothers and their wives, Robert and Barb and Larry and Naomi Pudvah all of Tucson, AZ as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hibbard’s family extends a very special “thank you” to the members of Missisquoi Valley Rescue as well as the staff of the Franklin County Home Health Agency, especially Emily Prouty Dillon RN.

James Stearns West Pawlet Fire
James J Stearns, age 51, passed away on June 4, 2010, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H.
Jim was born on May 15, 1959, in Granville, N.Y., the son of the late Harley N. and Dorothy (Powers) Stearns.
Jimmy was employed at Telescope Casual Furniture for 37 years. He also was a lifelong farmer. But his real passion in life was his role as a father and grandfather. He loved spending time at his camp on Lake St. Catherine, and to while away the evenings by a roaring bonfire with family and friends. Jim had a fascination with fireworks. He loved watching the various explosive displays around the lake on the Fourth of July, but would save his own display for later. He liked to ring the perimeter of his camp with 20,000-plus fireworks and set them off basking in the sounds and colors of his display. Jim loved nature and enjoyed sugaring, hunting and fishing, as well as riding his four-wheeler. He was president of the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Dept., a member of the school board of the Mettowee School and a member of the NRA.
Survivors are a son, Harley Stearns of West Pawlet; and two daughters, Carol Ann Herbst and her husband Lee of West Pawlet and Cheasna Stearns and her companion Todd Cram of Castleton, Vt.; as well as two siblings, Thomas Stearns and his wife Helen of Lake Forrest, Calif., and Kathie Ferguson and her husband Bill of Hampton. Jim was also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Kendra Clark, Mackenzie Clark, Aaron Stearns and Cody Herbst.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. at the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Dept. Burial will follow in the Mountainview Cemetery. Following the burial, the family will receive callers and continue the celebration of Jim's life back at the firehouse.

Arthur Briggs Cavendish Volunter Fire Department
Arthur "Art" J. Briggs, 83, died May 7, 2010, surrounded by his family at Mount Ascutney Hospital in Windsor.¡¡ He was born June 30, 1926, in Rutland, the son of Frank E. and Bessie (McLellan) Briggs.¡¡ Mr. Briggs served in the 8th Air Force during World War II in Okinawa. He was a bomber crash crew firefighter. He married Isabelle Hewey on June 26, 1948, in Cavendish. They later made their home in Cavendish.¡¡¡¡ Survivors include a son, James A. Briggs of Ludlow; a daughter, Lois Briggs of Uxbridge, Mass.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.¡¡ He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Isabelle, and by his sister, Beverly Crabtree.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, at the Cavendish Baptist Church. The Rev. Abraham Gross, pastor, will officiate.¡¡ Burial will follow in the Cavendish Village Cemetery in Cavendish.¡¡ There will be no calling hours.
David P. Trueman Essex and Ferrisburgh Fire Departments On May 5, 2010, David P. Trueman peacefully ended his three and a half year journey with melanoma. His wife and children were there to walk him home. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa. on Aug. 29, 1942, the son of George and Florence (Hogan) Trueman. On Nov. 19, 1966, David married Vicki Rector in Lansdowne, Pa. David is survived by his wife of 43 years, Vicki; two children, David J. Trueman and his wife, Emily, of Sandston, Va., and Heather Tenda and her husband, James, of Williston; five grandchildren who adored their Pepa, Jacob, Caroline, and Adam Trueman, and Jack and Owen Tenda; and by his pal, Kringle; his brothers, Daniel Trueman and his wife, Joan, of Havertown, Pa., and his twin, George Trueman and his wife, Claudia, of Louisville, Ky.; and nieces and nephews. Dave was proud to be a charter member of the Essex Town Fire Department and a life member of the Ferrisburgh Fire Dept where his baked beans became legend at the annual Chicken BBQ. He also volunteered for Charlotte Rescue. He belonged to the Ethan Allen Masonic Lodge and the Vergennes and Shelburne Lions Clubs.
A Celebration of David's life will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Old Lantern, Greenbush Rd. in Charlotte. There will be no formal calling hours. They will take place after the service.

We join with the Ferrisburgh Volunteer Fire Department in mourning the passing of Benjamin (Chuck) Donnelly. Chuck has been a member of the Ferrisburgh Department for 54 years. Ron was previously a firefighter with the Middlebury Fire Department and in recent years had continued his service as a dispatcher with the department. He has had several family members, including his son Myron, grandson Scott and granddaughter Torri follow him into the fire service.
William "Billy" Girard Swanton Fire Department
Billy was previously a firefighter with the Swanton Fire Department. He is the son of Tim and Kathy Girard. Tim is a member of the Swanton and St. Albans City Fire Departments as well as 1st Vice President of the Vermont State Firefighters Association.
Visiting hours will be held at the Heald Funeral Home on Friday, February 19th from 5 - 8 pm. The St. Albans City Fire Station will be open for anyone wishing to meet there prior to attending the visitation, although it is not necessary to meet there unless individual departments choose to.

Doris Christine Dumont, age 56 years, died Thursday evening, Feb. 11, 2010, at her Middle Road residence, surrounded by loving family and friends.
Born in St. Albans on Nov. 2, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Roland Harold and Joan Lillian (LaGoy) St. Pierre. She attended schools in Swanton graduating from MissisquoiValleyUnionHigh School in the Class of 1971.
Doris spent much of her life caring for the sick and those medically in need throughout Swanton and the surrounding communities. She has served for over 26 years as a certified Emergency Medical Technician with Missisquoi Valley Rescue, spending a number of those years as a member of the Missisquoi Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Vermont Firefighters Assoc. Doris enjoyed scrap booking and processing photographs and will especially be remembered for her beautiful flower gardens.
Besides her extended family at Missisquoi Valley Rescue, Doris leaves her longtime best friend and companion, Paul Rocheleau; four very special grandchildren, Chelsea and Shelby Dumont, Rae Ann Mulheron and Raymond Dumont III, all of Swanton; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
She was predeceased by her son, Raymond Dumont Jr., on Sept. 18, 2002; her father, Roland St. Pierre, on Sept. 12, 2003; and her mother, Joan St. Pierre, on Dec. 26, 2009.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Thomas D. Nadeau will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the St. Pierre family lot in St. Mary¡¯s Cemetery. Emergency Medical Services honors will be exemplified. Leonard D. "Sonny" Cyr Middlebury Fire Department
Sonny D. Cyr of Middlebury died peacefully in Birchwood Terrace Healthcare on Jan. 27, 2010. Sonny was born in Weybridge, Vt. on March 25, 1942, the son of Leonard P. and Doris L. Cyr. He enjoyed being in the woods, hunting and fishing. Sonny was employed by the Town of Middlebury's Department of Public Works for 42 years. He loved working with and for the public. Sonny was also a member of the Middlebury Fire Department for 44 years, becoming a lifetime member in 2007. He also wound the town's clock and hung the banners across Main Street for many years. Sonny is survived by his wife Nancy; son Philip, daughter-in-law Jennifer and grandson Devon; his brother Robert and his wife Jeannette; brother Joseph and several nieces, nephews, and grand nieces. He was predeceased by his father, his mother, his sister Doris Pelkey and his daughter Kate. Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's church in Middlebury. Interment will follow at St. Peters Cemetery in Vergennes.
Russell A. Desautels Mt Holly Fire Department BELMONT - Russell Albert Desautels, 65, died Jan. 25, 2010, at MountAscutneyHospital in Windsor, following a long illness.
He was born Dec. 10, 1944, in Burlington, the son of Leonard and Irene (Paquette) Desautels. He married Mary E. Perry Oct. 6, 1990.
Mr. Desautels worked 39 years in management with Grand Union Co. and for seven years with Sure Winner Foods Co. out of Saco, Maine, as a salesman and merchandiser until his retirement in 2008 due to his failing health.
He served as constable for MountHolly and as president of Mount Holly Volunteer Fire Department, as well as a member of Mount Holly Rescue Squad and Ludlow Rescue Squad. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was active in the Big Brother Program. Mr. Desautels enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, bowling and NASCAR racing.
Survivors include his wife of Belmont; daughter, Aria Bishop of Texas; sisters, Mary Rose Evens of Connecticut, Pauline Sliker of Burlington, Elaine Berringer of New York, Dianne Foote of Colchester, JoAn Duggan of Milton and Nancy Corbin of Essex; a brother, Richard Desautels of Milton; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at St. Patrick's Church in Wallingford. An open house and memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Odd Fellows Hall in Belmont. There are no calling hours. Herbert Jackson Bridport Fire Department
It is with regret the VSFA joins the Bridport Fire Department in announcing the passing of Herbert (Herb) Jackson. 88, of the Bridport Fire Department. Herb was also a past president of the Addison County Firefighters Association.
He was a member of Morning Sun Lodge #5 of Bridport and was a founding member of the Bridport Fire Department and maintained his association for over 60 years. He was a former member of the Bridport Grange and was a volunteer for Champlain Valley Agency on Aging.
Family members include his wife Gertrude (Birchard ) Jackson of Middlebury; a son, Evan Jackson and his wife Robin of Salisbury; a daughter, Crystal Jackson and her husband, Reid Peck of Weybridge; a sister, Isabel Bronson of Bridport ; four grandchildren, James, Nate, Ashley and Sky Jackson; three great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

David B. McMullen, II Cornwall Fire Department
David B. McMullen, II, 44, of the Cornwall Fire Department and formerly of the Proctor Fire Department died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford. Born Oct. 26, 1965 in Barre, he was the son of David B. and Marilyn L. (Johnson) McMullen. He was employed by the State of Vermont for the past 21 years, with 17 years in the Department of Corrections, and was currently the Training Coordinator for Homeland Security at the Vermont Police Academy in Pittsford. A resident of Cornwall for the past two years, he had previously resided in Proctor, serving as a member of the fire department in both communities. Survivors include his wife, Eugenia J. "Jean" McMullen of Cornwall, his mother of Barre; one son, Casey M. McMullen of Cornwall; one daughter, Makenzie E. McMullen of Cornwall; one brother, Patrick M. McMullen of Montpelier; and several aunts, an uncle, nieces, and a nephew. David was predeceased by his father and a brother, Sean A. McMullen. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the Otter Valley Union High School Auditorium, followed by a time of fellowship in the school cafeteria.

Chief Ralph J. Jackman Vergennes Fire Department VSFA Past President
RALPH J. JACKMAN 07/04/24- 01/02/10 VERGENNES - A man of endurance and eloquent character, Ralph J. Jackman, 85, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Ralph was born on July 4, 1924, a twin son born to Glenn and Ila (Sweet) Jackman in Bristol, Vt. He attended Saint Michael's College until he was called to serve his country in the European Theater where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After returning home he continued to serve in the Army Reserves from 1946-1972. In 1946 he partnered with his brother, Charles, to begin their successful careers operating Jackman Fuels, Inc. He retired from the fuel business in 1989. Ralph married his high school sweetheart Myrle (Jacobs) Jackman on July 29, 1946. He is survived by his wife, Myrle; his five daughters: Lynn (Michael) Jackson-Donnelly, Catherine Desjadon, Christine (P. Michael) Collette, Susan (Gregory) Burdick, Carleen (William) Telgen and his daughter by heart, Deborah Senesac; twelve grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters-in law, Elaine Bordeaux, Carol Burbank and brother in law, Burton Jacobs as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition, he leaves his extended family, the sons and daughters of the Vergennes Fire Department. He was predeceased by an infant son, Mark Stewart and a son-in-law, Ronald Desjadon; as well as his twin brother, Fred, his brothers, Charles, Francis and Glenn, Jr. He joined the Vergennes Fire Department in 1947, became Chief in 1954 and served as Chief until Nov., 2009. His proudest accomplishments include: building a new fire station, the department being the first in the State to have a hose reel truck, use of a four inch hose and establishing a cadet program. The Department took a major step forward with the purchase of two new trucks in 1994 and three new trucks to the department this past year. To his merit, he has three career firefighter grandsons and five grandsons serving in volunteer departments. Testimony to his leadership are the positions he has held and the honors he has received; two-time past president of the Vermont State Firefighters Assoc, past president and lifetime member of the Addison County Firefighters Assoc, the Robert B. King Fire Chief of the Year and the Francis J. Shorkey Fire Chief of the Year. Beyond his service as a firefighter and desiring to serve further, he was also a member of the American Legion Post 14, the Addison County Eagles, a charter member of the Vergennes Rotary for 56 years; an organizer for Meals on Wheels; and an active servant to Saint Peter's Catholic Church, serving in many capacities. In recognition of his many years of service to his community and his Fire Department his achievements were read into the Congressional Record in June, 2008 by Congressman Bernie Sanders. His many achievements garnered during his lifetime are too numerous to mention. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 5 from 4 to 8 at the Vergennes Fire Station. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Peter's Catholic Church at 10 on Wednesday, Jan. 6 with interment at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Bristol, Vt. Peter Coe Shoreham Fire Department
Peter James Coe, 43, died Dec. 27, 2009, from injuries sustained in a pedestrian/automobile accident, while he was aiding a stranded motorist. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 31st at 1 PM at the Shoreham Congregational Church.
Fire service personnel are asked to meet at the Shoreham Fire Station at 12 noon.

Joan Lillian St. Pierre Mississquoi Valley Rescue
Joan Lillian St. Pierre, 74, died peacefully early Saturday morning, Dec. 26, 2009, in the Northwestern Medical Center with loving family at her side. Joan was a longtime member of Mississquoi Valley Rescue and the VSFA.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thurs., Dec. 31, 2009, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St. Swanton. The calling hours will be at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a fire service group attending at 7:30.
James Paquette, Sr. Isle LaMotte Fire Company Alburgh Fire & Rescue
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Paquette, Sr.
Jim was a former chief of the Isle LaMotte Fire Company as well as a firefighter and EMT with Alburgh Fire and Rescue. Jim is also the father of Alburgh Fire captain James ¡°Slim¡± Paquette Jr.
There will be a service this Saturday Nov. 14th at 11:00 AM at the Alburgh Fire Station. Everyone is invited to participate. There will be an apparatus procession from Kidder Memorial Home in Swanton to Alburgh Fire Station where there will be a brief service. After the service the procession will continue from Alburgh Fire Station to the cemetery on Church St. in Isle LaMotte with a short pause in front of the IVFC station.
When we are done at the cemetery we encourage everyone to come back to the Alburgh station hall to enjoy a luncheon that is being provided by AVFD, AVFD Auxiliary, and other members of the community.
Anyone who would like to bring a vehicle or vehicles to be in the procession is asked to meet in front of Kidder Memorial home between 10:00 and 10:15 Saturday morning.
Richard Hoburn Sheldon Fire Department Highgate Fire Department
Richard Wilder Hoburn, age 69, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, with his family at his side.
He was born March 14, 1940, in St. Albans, the son of the late Gerald and Marion (Wilder) Hoburn.
Dick attended BFA-St. Albans. As a young man he worked at the Missisquoi Pulp Mill in Sheldon. Most of his working career he loved driving truck which he did for many area trucking companies, retiring at age 63 ½. He was also a member of the New Hampshire National Guard from 1956 to 1962.
Dick was very active in community affairs. He was a charter member of the Sheldon Volunteer Fire Department starting in 1957. He was also a member of the Highgate Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing especially with his son. He also loved working and spending time in the sugar woods with his son and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Betty (Witherell) Hoburn. He is also survived by his children, Richard M. ¡°Ricky¡± Hoburn and his wife, Deborah, of Rice Hill, and Ann Mason and her husband, Ricky, of Richford. Numerous other relatives also survive him.
In keeping with Dick¡¯s wishes, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls, with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in the Rice Hill Cemetery.

Luke Yustin Bridport Fire Department
VSFA joins the Bridport Fire Department in mourning the passing of Luke Yustin over the weekend. Luke passed away in Texas, where he was serving as a Captain in the US Army, after a motor vehicle accident. Luke had been an active member of the Bridport Fire Department prior to his military service and continued to be involved the department activities any time he was home visiting.

Shaun Steadman Bristol Fire Department
SHAUN ALLEN STEADMAN BRISTOL - Shaun Allen Steadman, 31, passed away peacefully on Sept. 27, 2009, in his home with his wife by his side after a long battle with cancer. He was born on June 12, 1978, in Middlebury, the son of Allen and Norma Kimball. Shaun married Jessica (Martell) Steadman on March 15, 2003. Shaun was a dedicated member of Bristol Fire Department and was first vice commander for the sons of the American Legion Post #19. Shaun developed many special friends during this time. Shaun was known for his generosity and dedication to his friends, family and community. Shaun enjoyed yearly golf trips to South Carolina with his great friend Kirk. During deer season Shaun could be found at Hillsboro Inn where he had many special unforgettable times with his best friends, Mike, Chris, Kelly and Dave. In addition to his wife, Shaun is survived by his parents, Allen and Norma Kimball; brothers, Ivan Steadman and wife Sue, Billy Steadman and wife Lisa, Kevin Steadman and wife Theresa, Jeff Kimball; his sister Julie Manning, brother-in-law Scott Manning; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Gregory and Rhonda Martell; sister and brother-in-law, Jamie and Scott Oberle; and very special nephew Evan. Shaun touched many people in his short life and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Special thanks to Dr. Sanders, Margaret and staff at VCCM. Richard J. Del Bianco Rutland Town Fire Department
Richard J. Del Bianco, 78, of Center Rutland, suffered a stroke on Wednesday, and died Saturday afternoon, September 5, 2009 at The Pines of Rutland, surrounded by his loving family and fiancée. He was born November, 6, 1930, in Proctor, VT, the eldest child of Araldo and Flora (Ravenna) Del Bianco.
He graduated in 1948 from Mount Saint Joseph Academy and was hired by the Vermont Marble Company as a draftsman. He continued his career with the Detroit Marble Company until he was drafted by the Army where he spent 21 months in Korea achieving the rank of Corporal.
Dick was a Charter Member of the Rutland Town Fire Department, Rutland Town School Board, Town & City Clerk's Association, Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #31, Italian Aid Society, Proctor-Pittsford Country Club, St. Peter's Church and Parish Council. He had a 23 year perfect attendance record at Rutland South Rotary Club and earned the distinction of becoming a Paul Harris fellow.
Dick is survived by his fiancée, Susan Roland, of Rutland, his five children and their significant others, Lynn Hier and Bernie Peatman, of Rutland, Dr. Richard E. Del Bianco and Peggy Lucci, of Pittsford, Robert Del Bianco and Cynthia Dundon, of Center Rutland, Gail Del Bianco and Cia Rochford, of South Padre Island, TX, and David Del Bianco and Tiffany, of Center Rutland, and his seven grandchildren; Evan Hier, Danielle, Kayla, Justin, Jordan, Kyle and Luke Del Bianco. He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Marilyn, his parents, and his brother Bobby.
A celebration of Dick's life will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday at St. Peter's Church in Rutland with his burial following at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends from 3 to 7 PM on Tuesday at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
William D. Leach, Sr. Pawlet Fire Department Dorset Fire Department
PAWLET - William D. Leach Sr., 81, a lifelong resident of Pawlet, Vt., passed away August 31, 2009, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. He was born in Pawlet on November 10, 1927, the son of James W. and Ruby (Harwood) Leach. Bill was a 1946 graduate of Burr and Burton Seminary. He was a WWII veteran, where he served in the United States Marine Corps, 2nd Marine Division. He married the former Rosalind Reid on February 14, 1950. Rosalind passed away on January 28, 1998.
Bill was a dairy farmer most of his working life. He was the director of the Bennington County Milk Co-op for 12 years and took part in soil conservation. He rented the Griswold farm for 35 years. He showed cattle at fairs and country shows with his sons for many years. He had also worked on the Stratton Ski Area road crew for four years and at Raley's Cement in Rawsonville for two summers and also drove trucks for Doug Dorr. On September 22, 1984, he sold his cattle and machinery.
Bill was a 25-year member of the Pawlet Fire Department, serving two years as chief, and Town of Pawlet Fire Warden for 25 years. He was an 18-year member of the Dorset Fire Department and a member of the BenningtonCounty training committee. He had been a member of the Vermont Fire Chiefs Assoc. since 1981. He was a legacy life member of the Harned-Fowler VFW Post 6471 where he went up through the chairs and was commander from 1977-78 and also served as chaplain from 1996-2008. He was a life member of both the Manchester Eagles and Arlington American Legion Post 69.
He is survived by his four sons, William Jr. and his wife Diane Leach of Pawlet, Ken and his wife Linda Leach of Branchburg, N.J., Stephen and Charlie Leach, both of Pawlet, Vt.; and his four grandchildren, Rebecca, Melissa, Kenny and Christopher. He was predeceased by his brothers, James and Henry Leach.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 4, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. in the Mettowee Valley Cemetery Chapel in Pawlet. Burial with full military honors will follow at the cemetery. Firefighter Kenneth Frizzell, Jr. Charleston Volunteer Fire Department
Mr. Kenneth Eugene Frizzell, Jr, 55 ,of East Charleston, beloved husband of Grace Frizzell, died suddenly August 30, 2009 in West Charleston. He was born February 9, 1954 in Concord, Vermont a son of Kenneth and Ellen (Jessman) Frizzell. He grew up in Lundenburg, Gilman, and Wallingford, Vermont. On May 25, 1974 he married Grace Colburn who survives him. After his marriage he lived in Rutland for a short time and more recently in East Charleston. He was employed by Tivoly in Derby Line where he was a steel receiver and cut off operator for more than 30 years. Kenneth was a devoted father, attending all his children¡¯s sport and school functions. He was also a delinquent tax collector for the Town of Charleston. He loved to hunt, snowmobile, playing cards with his friends, and especially playing with his grand boys. He was also a little league coach. He was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church in East Charleston, Charleston Historical Society, Past Master of the Island Pond Lodge # 44 F & AM, Master of Valley Lodge 106 and past District Deputy Grand Master District # 10, Mount Sinai Shrine Temple # 3, Northeast Fire Brigade Parade Unit, Treasurer of the North Star Chapter #25 O.E.S., Charleston Volunteer Fire Dept and their past Treasurer, and Charleston Town Fire Warden . He is survived by his wife Grace Frizzell of East Charleston, his children Amy Sherlaw and her husband Fred of Derby, and Daniel Frizzell and his wife Alicia of Bristol and by his cherished grandchildren Sam and Evan Sherlaw of Derby and Owen and Jack Frizzell of Bristol. John P. Horton of Cummington and Marlboro, Vt., a lifelong volunteer firefighter, died in the line of duty on Thursday. He was 68. Born in Lanesboro, he began his 47-year-long volunteer firefighting career in Lanesboro at the age of 16. When he married his wife, Jeanette, he moved to Litchfield, Conn., where he worked as a herdsman at Toll Gate Farms. Shortly after moving to Litchfield, he returned to Massachusetts to manage the Janowycz Farm in Cheshire. He later moved to Cummington with his family, where he operated Windswept Farm, raising a herd of registered Ayrshire cattle, and worked as the R.F.D. Mail Carrier. He also served as a volunteer firefighter in Cummington, receiving numerous recognitions and awards. He ultimately became Chief of the Cummington Fire Department, where he was instrumental in instituting enhanced 911 services in Western Massachusetts. He operated a second farm in Marlboro, Vt., For 30 years, and also volunteered with the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. In Marlboro, he trained firefighters and members of the community in CPR, was a member of the Local Emergency Planning Committee, worked part-time for the Marlboro Highway Dept., and was an alternate Emergency Planning Director. Most recently, he served as the Assistant Chief of the Marlboro Volunteer Fire Company. He was a 1958 graduate of PittsfieldHigh School and received an Associate's Degree in Agriculture from the StockbridgeSchool of Agriculture at UMASS-Amherst. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman throughout his life. He is leaves his wife of nearly 46 years, Jeanette A. Horton of Cummington; two sons, Michael W. Horton of Florence, a former Northampton Firefighter, and his wife, Tracy, and Preston P. Horton of Boston, a sergeant with the MBTA Transit Police Dept., and his partner, Howard; his beloved mother, Lillian Horton, of Lanesboro; his sister, Jill Schmidt, and her husband, John, of Chicago, Ill; his brother, David Horton, and his wife, Doreen, of Windsor; his sister, Elizabeth Conerly, and her husband, Robert, of Guilford, Conn., and his loving sister-in-law, Helen Horton, of Lanesboro. Dale R. Long, 48, of Bennington passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 15, 2009, in Bennington. Born in Bennington on Nov. 3, 1960, the son of Charles T. and Mildred Cooper Long, he was a 1978 graduate of Burr and Burton Seminary. Dale was an Emergency Medical Technician for 25 years, serving the communities in Manchester and Bennington. Dale attained the level of Critical Care EMT, the highest you can go as an EMT. He loved golfing, the outdoors, 4-wheeling and, in earlier years, hunting. He was a diehard Oakland Raiders fan. He served as the team trainer for the Mill River Football team for four years. Dale was also a Master Electrician. He leaves two sons, Carsen Long of Danbury, Conn., and Timothy Long of Augusta, Wis.; his brothers, Richard Long of Colchester and Charles J. Bernard Bronson Bridport Fire Department
BERNARD H. BRONSON BRIDPORT, Vt. - Bernard H. Bronson was born in Bridport on Feb. 25, 1921, the son of the late Horace A. and Alice (Myrick) Bronson, died on March 30, 2009, in Rutland Healthcare and Rehabilitation. He attended schools in Bridport, Shoreham, and Whiting. On Sept. 27, 1943, he married Ellen M. McGinn in a service at St. Bernadette's Church. Bernard was a farmer living in Middlebury and Bridport. He was active in his community playing baseball for the Bridport and Panton teams. He drove truck for the town and for LaRocque's trucking.
Bernard was a charter member of the Bridport Fire Department, organized in 1948. He served as president of the Addison County Firefighters in 1952, becoming a life member.
Bernard is survived by a son, Francis Bronson of Bridport and a daughter, Barbara and her husband Andre Mercier of Bridport. He had four grandchildren who gave him lots of love during his life, Bailey Bronson, who shared Grampa's love of sheep, as well as Jason, Raymond, and Renee Mercier, "Grampa's Shadow." He is also survived by brothers, Horace A. and wife Joyce of South Burlington, Malcolm and wife Isabelle of Bridport, Thad and his wife Virginia of Bridport, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Ellen; his brothers, Wymond and Lloyd; and a sister, Thelma LaRocque.

Ralph Lillie Pownal Valley Fire Department
Ralph Lillie, age 48, a resident of South Stream Road in Pownal, died on Thursday evening, March 19, 2009 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a long illness. He was born in Bennington on June 15, 1960, son of the late Ernest and Jean Wood Lillie. He received his education in Bennington and is a graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School in the class of 1978. He was employed at VTrans State Highway Department in Bennington. Ralph served in the Marine Corp for six years following his high school graduation. He married the former Teresa Glanovsky in Lake George, N.Y., on July 2, 2004. Ralph was a firefighter with the East Pownal Fire Department. He was appointed First Assistant in 1990 until 1993. He was the President of the East Pownal Fire Company from 1991 until 1993. He was appointed Chief in 1994, and was a Captain in 1995 until the fire company merged into Pownal Valley Fire Department. He was a former member of the Bennington Moose Lodge and the Southern Vermont Wednesday Night Bowling League. He enjoyed NASCAR, hunting, fishing, camping, being outdoors. He enjoyed vacationing in Maine, New Hampshire, and Canada. He especially enjoyed spending time with his two grandsons and his dog, "Kippy". Besides his wife, Ralph leaves his daughter Jennifer Bevins of Bennington, his two grandsons; Ryo Bevins and Noah Lillie of Bennington. He has one brother, Michael Lillie of Shaftsbury, three sisters; Shirley Mason and her husband, Daniel of Searsburg, Vt., Lorraine Gates, and her husband, Gordon of North Pownal, Vt., and Judith Somerville of Bennington, Vt. He leaves his brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law; Michael and Ann Glanovsky of Shaftsbury, Vt., Steven Glanovsky of Lexington, N.C., and James and Sarah Glanovsky of Lexington, N.C., and his in-laws Steven and Barbara Glanovsky of Siler City, N.C. He has nieces and nephews; Kenneth Mason, Candy Jelley, Randy Gates, Jason Lillie, Aimee Brown, and Matthew Somerville. One aunt, Doris Lillie, and several cousins. Ralph is predeceased by one granddaughter Samantha Bevins.

The Vermont State Firefighters Association regrets to join the Chester Fire Department in announcing the passing of Chester Fire Explorer and Honorary Fire Fighter Aaron Douglas. Aaron was a member of the Explorers for three years and and Explorer Captain. He also received the Chief's Explorer of the Year Award for the past two years. Aaron was a senior at Green Mountain Union High School. There will be a full honors Fire Department Funeral on March 7, 2009.
The procession will start at the Chester Fire Department at 1:00 pm and go to Green Mountain High School where the services will be held. Line up will be at 12:00 and refreshments will be available for departments wishing to come earlier. James Giroux Grand Isle Rescue
James David "Jim" Giroux, age 52 years, a longtime resident of North Hero, died unexpectedly, late Sunday evening, Feb. 22, 2009, in Fletcher Allen Health Care. Born in Burlington on June 7, 1956, he was the son of Leo and the late Grace (Taylor) Giroux. He graduated from Essex High School and on Aug. 28, 1982, was married to Tracy (Sherwin) who survives him. Known as a Master Carpenter and Builder, Jim began his career working several years for Kessel - Duff Construction and later established his own construction company known as Mill Run Woodworks. He was active in the North Hero community serving as an EMT with Grand Isle Rescue and was a member of the North Hero Historical Society. Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially loved living in North Hero on the Way Farm. Jim will always be remembered for his humor, wit, generosity and goodness. WEST TOPSHAM ¨C George S. Gibby, 98, of Batten Road, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
Born April 28, 1910, in Winthrop, Mass., he was the son of Arthur W. and May E. (Connery) Gibby. He graduated from the Huntington School for Boys in Boston in 1928, immediately being employed at the family's iron foundry in East Boston, servicing the needs of the local machine shops, shipyards, and municipalities. That business was closed in 1934 and later, in partnership with his father, a printing business "Gibby Press" was established, operating successfully for the following 59 years.
On Feb. 22, 1935, he married Grace C. Hall, daughter of Warren C.K. and Aphia (Smith) Hall, in Winthrop, Mass. They made their home in Winthrop until moving to West Topsham, VT in 1952. She died November 29, 2002.
George served on the Board of Trustees of the Winthrop Community Hospital, was elected as a Town Meeting Member, and was employed in the iron and alloy foundries of the General Electric Company, River Works, in Lynn, Mass. He also volunteered for 10 years with the Winthrop Auxiliary Fire Department as squad captain.
In 1952, he and his family then moved to West Topsham, moving the printing business with them. George became Chief of the newly organized, 1953, Tri-Village Fire Department. He later became involved with the State Fire Association's training program as an instructor and later as coordinator of the state program in the nine northern counties. He was appointed the state's coordinator for the off-campus program of the National Fire Academy and was also the volunteer representative with District 1 (New England) of TRADE (Training Resources and Data Exchange) of the U.S. Fire Administration, being honored with the nationally coveted J. Faherty Casey Award in November of 2002.
With his wife, Grace, as members of the board, they became involved with organizing Chop Point Camp in Woolwich, Maine, during 1967 and the school during 1987. George was treasurer of the West Topsham Community Church for many years and was also one of the organizers and a board member of the Valley Health Center in East Corinth. He was a member Minerva Masonic Lodge 86, F & AM of East Corinth and the Vermont Firefighters Association.
Survivors include three children, George Curtis Gibby and his wife, Anne of Spring, Texas, Grant Arthur Gibby and his wife, Swanee of Auburn, N.H., and Grace Marilyn "Bonnie" Machia of South Burlington; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
His wife, Grace Gibby; his brother, Francis Gibby; his sister, Dorothy Gibby, and his grandson, Sean O' Flaherty Fahey predeceased him.
His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, in the New Hope United Methodist Church in Waits River. Entombment will be in the Hooker and Whitcomb Vault to await later interment in West Topsham Village Cemetery. Donald "Butch" Shaw, 85, a lifelong resident of Middlebury, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation, surrounded by his loving family. Born March 13, 1923 at the family home in Middlebury, he was the fifth of six children born to Charles J. and Frances (Sweenor) Shaw. He was a graduate of Middlebury High School where he lettered three sports and was later inducted into the Middlebury High School Hall of Fame in 1996. He was Captain of the hockey team. He married Jourdaine Severy on April 6, 1946 at St. Mary's Church in Middlebury. He proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during WW II and was stationed in the South Pacific. For over 35 years he was service manager for Brush Motors and later worked at G. Stone Motors until retirement. During retirement he was groundskeeper for UVM Morgan Horse Farm, Weybridge. He was a member of St. Mary's Church. He was a member of the Middlebury Fire Department for 65 years where he was a life member and served as Assistant Chief from 1962 until present and as a Lieutenant from 19551956. In addition he was a life member of the Addison County Fire Fighters Association. He was First Vice Commander in 1954-1955 of the American Legion. He was past president of the Small City Steppers Club. He was an avid camper and snowmobiler. Butch enjoyed cooking with Nub Duclos for the Middlebury Fireman's Summer Bazaar and spending time with his family. Family members include, Charles "Butch" Shaw and his wife Mary of Florence and their son Dana; Donna Patterson and her husband Skip of Middlebury, and their sons Donald Patterson, Richard Patterson and his wife Michele; Robert Shaw and his wife Janet of Bristol and their children, Jessica, Amanda and Ian; David Shaw and his wife Wendy of Weybridge, and their daughter Danielle; and Patrick Shaw and his wife Lisa of Weybridge and their children Ben and Kimberly; and two great grandchildren, Zack and Nick Patterson of Maryland; one sister, Lucy Danyow of Middlebury; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Jourdaine (Severy) Shaw on Nov. 10, 2004 and by two brothers, Buster and Lucius Shaw and two sisters Helen Shaw and Dorothy Moore. Richard Baker Alburgh Fire Department
Richard Allen "Dick" Baker, age 73 years, a lifelong Alburgh resident died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, Feb. 3, 2009, at his home on the Poor Farm Road. Born in Alburgh on, Jan. 3, 1936, he was the son of the late Elmer and Ella (Darrow) Baker. He graduated from Alburgh High School. He served for a time in the Vermont Army National Guard and following the Korean Conflict continued to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. On Feb. 14, 1956, he was married to the former Barbara Williams who survives him. Dick worked many years and later retired from IBM of Essex Junction and in earlier years operated the family farm in South Alburgh. Dick was an extremely active and dedicated member of the Alburgh community. In 1969 he joined the Alburgh Volunteer Fire Department and since 1984 has served as Chief. He was a founding member and vice chairperson of the North Country International Fire Training School. He was one of the state's first certified EMTs, (#28), and a member of Grand Isle County Mutual Aid Association. He also served Alburgh as a member of the school board, planning commission, industrial corporation and the housing finance board. He was also a member of the South Alburgh Cemetery Commission and Columbus, Lodge 11, F.&A.M. He will always be remembered for his beautiful vegetable gardens. Aside his wife Barbara of 53 years; Dick leaves five children, Tammy James and husband Jim of Deep Run, N.C., Rick Baker and wife Laura of Alburgh, Wendy Baker and fiance Raymond Burdo of Ellenburg, N.Y., Debra Winter and husband David "Tut" of Keeseville, N.Y., and Amy Barbour and husband Brian of Alburgh: his "adopted" son James Blair and wife Trudy of Alburgh; grandchildren Angela, Robert, Brandon, Dylan, Ali, James, Holly, Alisa, Logan, Ashley and Kevin; six great-grandchildren; a brother Arlen Baker and family of Kansas; a sister-in-law Virginia Baker of Essex Junction; a brother-inlaw Wallace K. Chief Fred Jackman (Retired) Bristol Fire Department
FREDERICK E. JACKMAN BRISTOL - Frederick E. Jackman, 84, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, after a brief illness illness. He was born on July 4, 1924, in his home in Lincoln. He was the son of Glenn and Ila Jackman. Fred graduated from Bristol High School in 1942, and attended St. Michael's College. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Asian Theatre. In 1946, he partnered with his brother Glenn and joined his father Glenn Sr. to operate the Jackman's Coal and Coke Company. On Aug. 23, 1947, he married Joan (Bosworth) Jackman.
His love for his community was evident in his generosity and many years of volunteer service. He joined the N.H. Munsill Hose Company in March of 1946 and served in many capacities including chief totaling over 60 years of service. Fred was a member of the Vermont State Fire Fighters Association and was the longest serving member with over 62 years of service. He was an intrical part in starting multiple fire departments in surrounding towns. He also served the community as a trustee and selectman. He was a member of the American Legion, Rotary Club, Meals on Wheels, Old Farts Club and a lifelong member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol. He is survived by his twin brother Ralph and wife Myrle; four children, Paul Jackman and his companion Cheri Rockwood, Peter and Debra Jackman, Lori (Jackman) and Thomas Parham, Lisa Jackman; nine grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Joan of 60 years; and brothers Frances, Charles and Glenn Jackman. The family would like to thank all his caregivers at Helen Porter Nursing Home, Addison County Home Health and Kathy Taylor. Chief Donald LaRock (Retired) Waterbury Fire Department
Donald L. LaRock, 80, of South Main Street, passed away in Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008. Born in Forest Dale on Sept. 15, 1928, Don was the son of the late Dewey and Agnes (Dimick) LaRock. On Jan. 16, 1960, he married the former Patricia Donahue in Waterbury. Patricia passed away on Aug. 12, 2005.
A 32 year member of the Waterbury Village Fire Department, Don served in all of the department offices including Fire Chief for 10 years. In honor of his dedicated service, the Fire Tower Truck was named "Donald L. LaRock Tower Company" by the department. His other memberships included the Vermont Fire Chiefs Association, the Waterbury Area Senior Citizens, Grace Episcopal Church in Forest Dale, the Brandon High School Alumni Association and was a member for over 50 years of the Harry N. Cutting American Legion Post 59 of Waterbury. Donald loved his family very much and took great pleasure in the time spent with his grandsons, who meant the world to him. Once a firefighter, always a firefighter and even though Don had retired from the department due to declining health, his interest and soul remained intertwined with the firefighting community.

Richard Hollister Bennington Fire Department
Richard C. Hollister, age 89, a long-time resident of Bennington, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, leaving many fond memories for his loved ones. Richard, Dick, was a 57-year member of the Bennington Fire Department where he served as Chief from 1963-1965. He served as the Bennington County Rep to the Vt. State Fire Fighters Association, was a member of the New England Chiefs Association, and a Past President of the Bennington County Mutual Aid. Maurice "Mike" Adams Milton Fire Department
Maurice P. "Mike" Adams, 74, surrendered his soul peacefully to his loving savior on Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, in the presence of his family, following a struggle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He served for 40 years on the Milton Fire Department and Rescue Squad - 17 of which he was chief. Kenneth Smith Arlington Fire Department
It is with sadness that we inform you that Past Chief Kenneth Smith of the Arlington Fire Department has passed away. Ken was a past state instructor and taught many 45 hour basic courses as well as pumps in Bennington County and throughout Vermont.

Emile "Bill" LaPierre Orleans Fire Department
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Emile "Bill" LaPierre, a 64 year veteran of the Orleans Fire Department. Bill had been a member of the Orleans Fire Department since 1944 and he also served loyally as the VSFA Historian and as a member of the Nominating Committee. Bill's passion for VSFA history was inspirational.
